Last couple of puzzles I was VERY slow ... but got correct answer ... AND ... 1 point!!!! Anyone else notice? Have they made the change?

Thanks baddogno and alexm2310 ... will try V3 again ... although as you might have seen from my most recent post a few minutes ago ... maybe a point is now being awarded for correct albeit slow answers! That'd be good ... what a lot of us have asked for.

I'm using it on the iOS app and lately I've noticed that the clock is now counting up from zero - so no more pending deadline lol.. and I don't think it deducts points for time anymore.

I think I'm starting to see how this works ... I play at about 1600-1650 ... but as soon as I get above 1650 ... the computer throws puzzles with solve percentages of 7% - 28% ... WHY? ... why doesn't it continue to test me at around my level? Unfair!

I agree alexm2310 .. but it seems to me ... if I'm playing at 55% then I am developing a good base ... which is destroyed ... when the computer throws puzzles that are WAY over my head at me ...

Your tactical knowledge isn't destroyed - your base as you call it is augmented, as you see more of these insane, over-your-head tactics they'll become less insane, and soon enough you'll see order and patterns in there. That's how you learn new tactical patterns. Everything is over your head at some point

Yep, that's a big part of it.

alexm2310 ... you are right ... and I had one beautiful morning when ... I SAW EVERYTHING ... man it was ... awesome ... but back now to the norm ... and even though I know I'm learning ... it still seems to me that a mean Danny R ... throws low solve rate puzzles ... just 'cause ... he can!

Avatar of PhilJC

Like you baddogno ... me too ... getting older ... maybe that's the problem ... need to find Mary Shelley!! ... or become Faustus!!

Well done alexm2310 ... 250 points ... WOW ... I continue to faff around at 1550 ... roller coaster up 100 ... roller coaster down 100 ... wish I enjoyed roller coasters!

Forgot to add ... I fail to see ... or understand ... how problems with pass % rates of 10% ... can have a rating of 1550 ... surely if so few are solving them ... they should be rated higher?? ... just sayin' ...

Most are likely due to most people getting the initial moves but missing one of the last, or the last move. So, they get some points, the tactic rating goes down, and the percentage stays low.

Many of those probably have a flaw in them, something like multiple good continuations at the point people fail.

Ahhh ... thank you Martin_Stahl ... slowly slowly I learn the intricacies of your system ...

I know what you are saying.  I think the word "flaw" here might not be best, though.  I usually refer to this "flaw" as "noise," because you get multiple possibilities that really seem correct, and the one possibility you see might not be the correct one.  I use different interfaces and training software to determine the amount of noise I get in my training.  The reality is that chess.com's TT has done the most to take pure patterns I've memorized and help me effectively implement them in my USCF tournament games.  Now, if you are just trying to absorb up these patterns, TT certainly is far from the best.  I switch between chess.emrald.net, CT-ART, Chessimo (which is AMAZING...) and some others for slightly more purified patterns; but, obviously, I do insane amounts of TT problems to sharpen my pattern recognition.

Right now, I'm trying to get absolutely every fundamental pattern into my "mental pattern bank," by flying through a bunch of Heisman's recommendations for books on elementary patterns.  I'm trying to get all of them in 3-6 seconds per, to ensure pattern recognition.  I'm seeing that when I do this sort of training, returning to TT frequently, my rating will make an immediate jump, and then it will slowly float up from there.

Chess.com has compiled a great set of resources for training, and I don't even think that TT has a true flaw, in the way that you feel it does.  I just think it has a specific philosophical value in its variety of training potential qua training tool.

I think most of the tactics are probably fine. I specifically was referring to those mentioned in the post I was replying to. Low pass rate, low rating. Those tactics likely have a particular flaw; either they give points too early or a later move is questionable. It also is possible the move that causes failure of the tactic is just really hard to see.

i would personally advice you all to stop wasting your time here, because debating will get you nothing, try practice tactics as much as you can, cheers Wink

One request:

In many tactical puzzles, there is one best solution. But, there is also a good solution. Lot of times, people go for the good solution instead of the best one and lose points. Is it possible to add a few points in tactics trainer for choosing a good line instead of best line?

Avatar of Martin_Stahl

I can't say what the future holds but as of right now the puzzle code only supports one line.

Thanks for the quick reply. happy.png If its possible, please consider this point in future whenever you can.

Martin,

whenever I come to chess.com(using a bookmark), I get the V2 and I have to manually switch to V3. Is it possible to automatically get V3?
