I run linux on my computer and I was wondering if anyone had any imput on a good chess program. Years ago I learned to play chess on CM5500, i remember it had useful tools for learning to play better and I was wondering if there is anything similar for linux.

Ubuntu 8.04

Thanks, Galen

AS far as I know, there aren't any programs as comprehensive as Chessmaster available for linux, but SCID with any free engine like crafty would probably be a good start.

PyChess with the GNUChess engine on a linux netbook (Acer Aspire): quite happy about it.

I am still looking for a chess database (SCID is available with Fedora 9 RPM not straightforwrd to setup on my machine or Chess DB)

try eboard - it can use almost any engine (crafty or gnuchess are two of the best).
