Someone sent me Endgame strategy by Mikhail Shereshevsky originally written in Russian, is truly a wonderful book.
Two Excellent Books

I have the Silman books on my reading list (which is long). Haven't gotten that far down the list yet. I have done a lot of his Chess Mentor lessons, which were excellent. He really explains things well. I will definitely get to his books, but it will take a while. I am going through a strategy/tactics book ostensibly for kids that is highly rated by teachers (no it not for kids unless they are like Carlsen). It takes me a VERY long time because I set up two boards side-by-side and go through the variations. Some I do in my head if not very complex. I want the tacticle experience of using real sets for when I play my first OTB tourney.
I recently purchased two books that I highly recommend.
Study My Games to Improve Your Chess; and
My Return to Chess.
Both were written by Candidate Master Henrey Despres (chess2Knights on this site).
I have spent the afternoon perusing them at a high level. There are games that were recommended for brilliancy awards. They are self-published, so you would have to contact him to get them I believe.
These books are, in my estimation, useful to someone 1200 and up. I am around 1400, and they are already giving me some great help. However, they would be even more valuable I believe for 1700ish range and higher. Anyway, I love chess books. These were a great pruchase I will utilize for years. I can tell I will get more out of them as my chess improves.
