It really depends on the position, doesn't it? Because the opportunity to make that trade comes up rather early and often, in a castled position
Two minor pieces vs a rook and a pawn?

More often than not, 2 minor pieces will be better than a rook and a pawn if you can keep the files closed so the rook pair can not be at full strength, and the minor pieces can remain strong

I suspect the OP means the capture on f7 (or f2) when the opponent has castled, Bxf7 Rxf7, Nxf7 Kxf7.
It's generally considered bad.

Here is a helpful article by Dan Heisman on Counting Material.
And one by GM Larry Kaufman titled Evaluation of Material Imbalances.
Even in an endgame, especially if the minors have one rook to help them (i.e., Rook, Knight, and Bishop vs 2 Rooks and 1 extra pawn), the minors are almost always stronger (all else being equal). Often times, even if the side with the rook has 2 additional pawns, the minors are still the favorite. Two bishops are particularly powerful against a rook.
This trade comes up alot in my games and i was just wondering if it was a definite good trade or bad trade for either side. any help would be appreciated
