Typical Blitz Players

Lets jus say there is a blitz game about 5 0. You are down abt 2.5 points but have about 1:30 left n opponent has 0:20. Wut do you do?

1) Use ur time advantage to try 2 play correctly? and maybe save urself? after all ull hav a time advantage no matter wut. Maybe learn something. Maybe even still win r draw.

2) Out of habit, clock dem out. Abandon the game n jus make sure only their clock runs. Claim cheap win and say *Oh its blitz, its war, it da rules* n take some warped kinda pride out of getting it 2 say u won when u were clearly outplayed?

If u answerd 2, plz let me kno b/c u r like most internet players and i wud like 2 block you. Uve lost sight of wut chess is about and will never improve. Ur rating is surely inflated n u only care about ratings n clox but not chess.

Typically I find watching blitz too frustrating as mistakes are so common. It's great fun though, which if that's what one derives from it no matter how they play then I don't see the issue with either style. If I deciphered 'ur txt spk crtly' then that's my answer :0)

I'm with you to a certain extent. Blitz games with no delay clearly isn't your thing, and nor is it mine. I personally think Blitz is overrated, I prefer 15m+10s games myself, because all too often I win material in a Blitz game and am unable to do anything with it in time.

However, what is the point of playing a Blitz game with no delay if you're going to take this attitude? The player with 0:20 on the clock took more time to think than the player with 1:30. Time is material in Blitz. Both players enter the game knowing that any time spent could not be recovered, and the guy with 0:20 played too slowly.

My Chess coach once told me that Blitz is not Chess, but is loosely based on Chess. This context makes it clear what he meant.

Summing up: I answer "2" because it's Blitz. It's not just da rules, it's how Blitz is meant to be played! If you don't like it, play with time delay!

If you dont like losing on time then you shouldnt play blitz , problem solved.

Took more time to think? So their monitor disappears when my clock is running. Id say we both had same time 2 think. Sometimes the tactics right frm begining of game cause a ratio to be more lik 4:40 to :20. They had all taht time 2 think too. All they did was jus cut the time control in half.

Anywayz its jus a general ques. so i can see whos who. i hav an idea where it will go, maybe 90% aginst me n wud like 2 be entertained LOL. Personaly i dont care. I use blitz to warm up but cant seem 2 make myself take it seriously as a chess pursuit. ;-)

You don't know what an opponent will do when it's his turn, though.

Blitz is nice if you just want to move pieces around without much thought because your having a boring day. I play it with my chess engine as well as online. I don't care if I win or lose. Do you?

Of course #2 is the only reasonable choice.  If you want to play real chess you need longer time controls.  Blitz is about winning on time... I mean it's called blitz and bullet I don't know what you expect.

You are right about not improving though.  But players who play blitz don't play it to improve, they play it for fun and do their improving in other (longer) games.  I guess you missed the memo.

There was an NM in the main hall last night arguing that bullet takes more skill than OTB :/

I mean...an NM?

Well objectively it does take more skill... because it's faster :p

Just like 5 second chess on a 100x100 board would be even harder and take even more skill.

But the difficulty is a product of constraints, not the depth of skill you're able to bring out during a game.  Practically speaking, and when humans play chess against other humans, long time controls are where you can display your mastery of the game.

Ask the NM how many world champions he can name.  After he's done listing names, ask him how many world blitz champions he can name.  I wonder why it seems he respects classical champions so much more than he can't even recall a few blitz champions Wink

Blitz chess isn't just about beating your opponent at chess, but doing it quickly. If someone wins because you lose on time then they've earned their blitz points just as validly as if they'd checkmated you.

Bullet is basically intuition vs. intuition.  One cannot train for bullet Chess, only those with true skill may achieve greatness there.  There are cases in OTB chess where people have gone from rating 1000 to 2000 and above, if they had true skill they would never be 1000 in the first place, so they needed to obtain artificial skill to level the playing field against the truly talented.

2.5 points is very little, unless the opponent is about to queen. So, move around a little and try to pick up a piece with a schwindel of sorts. It's probably lost on time anyway.

Also I find your typing offensive.

Would you really if been proud to chalk that one up as a win anyway?

"You are down abt 2.5 points" ... What does this mean?

Avatar of Dutchday

Heh, how do you manage to get flagged by move 38 if you have 5 minutes anyway.

I think it's an exchange and a pawn.
