unpleasant opponents

If youre going to be on the internet, you need to accept one thing. People DO NOT act online how they would in person. Annonymity does weird things to some people. I call it technology beer, aka electronic courage.

You come here for a nice leisurely game of chess, and you get bombarded with the "gamer mentality" types. Got the headset on, piles of redbull cans all over the place.

Internet trash talk bugs me. Being anonymous doesn't change the fact that they are still addressing another human being. You're right though, a lot of guys that are jerks on the internet I assume are a lot different in person, probably to preserve their teeth.

For really nasty stuff, you should also report them. There's a bunch of tips under Help --> Report Abuse

I'm curious about this phenomenon.... does anonymity generally bring out one's worst personality or one's truer personality. I tend to think that how one acts without constraint is indicative of one's real self, but I can also see that someone may want to project or act out.

Yep. A tell tale sign of someone's true character.

My Aunt worked with a really nice guy for years. Everybody loved him, she would say when she told this story. He was a male nurse and the patients loved him too. He is now serving life in prison for murdering his wife and her child from a previous marriage. Sure he was a nice guy, but obviously he wasn't nice to people he didn't have to be nice to.

This is why i refer to it as technology beer, aka electronic courage.
Just as drinking lowers your inhibitions. being annonymous online does the same thing. So yes, how you act online is going to be a good indicator of your true nature.
