UNRATED TRICKS

I have noticed when I started as unrated and won about 12 games in a row (a couple of players timed out which helped me even more), I was able to go up in rank very fast.

However, after I took too much in, I realized I had to withdraw from some tournaments because I was making silly mistakes and losing pieces left and right. As a result I lost about 400 points (from 1670 to 1200 +)

My true average is about 1600, however, I'm so anxious to recover my rating, that I realize it's going to take me months to gain 200-300 points, providing I don't mess up.

My question is based on the fact that "Tactical Trainer" allows you to reset your ratings and start all over again, so, why couldn't I reset my rating to "unrated" and start all over again?

By true average do you mean Online rating only ? If not, how many tournament games, are you basing your true average on ?

Crimson: Hundreds of games. I don't play in chess.com only...

TT doesn't affect anybody's rating except yours.

But reseting online rating would equals to making a new account (which is not allowed) - especially because of possible sandbagging.

That's what I think about it.

Well by tournaments, I meant OTB ones, not online ones. Is that your USCF, or FIDE real rating in other words.

Avatar of Good-KnightJoe

My USCF is 1550 now, my online in ICCF is about 1650+ since I won a recent tourney.

MSC57: I don't get it. My rating does not affect anyone whether I become unrated or not. The fact is that no one loses 100 points just because they lose a game to an unrated.

Am I correct?

Thanks, I wouldn't worry so much about the online so much then. Peoples rating online is not something you can really go by. I've seen 1100's play like 1500's easily here.

I'm not really sure about that. But surely (if I would be able to do that), a 1700 would lose more points against Unrated as against 1800 (so, if I would lose on time so badly before to drop my rating for 300pts).

Yes?

I went and had a look at your games, since I took a big tumble in my Live Standard rating recently - relatively stable 1500+ down to a low point of just over 1300. I analysed the reasons (wasn´t hard, I´d been concentrating on the rating instead of the chess!) and started climbing again.

Sorry to have to say it, but you don´t seem to me to be a 1600 player (yet). Your wins against 1500+ players were timeouts, and in your few losses against 1100 players you neglected basics like king safety and paid the price. Understandable, it happened to me a lot recently - he´s low rated, I´ll walk all over him in 20 moves, and then bang, you´ve lost. But 1600 players just don´t do that, they make sure they´re safe on all fronts before attacking.

I´d just accept it, and concentrate on every game as if your opponent was your potential highest win yet. And if you get the choice, I wouldn´t go for opponents rated more than 100 higher than you. Make your first goal 1300, then 1400, and see how it goes from there.

Another tip - study more tactics, it´s the one thing which helps you improve very fast at our level. I see you have a tactics trainer rating of well over 1600, but that´s from only 4 problems, all of which you solved correctly - congratulations, but why haven´t you done more? Do 10 problems a day on chesstempo.com (Standard, without the clock) and try to get 10/10, every day, however long it takes (I´ve managed it once in about a year). That works wonders. Also the endgame problems there (it´s free).

I can understand your frustration with the slow rise in rating now, I´ve been there myself; but believe me, if you go about climbing again the right way, you´ll have more success and fun and, more importantly, learn a lot more, than if you try to force it by playing 1700 players. I wish you luck and success!

That's a good advice. I guess doing much better in ICCF was just something isolated, but I will follow up with your advice and see what happens in a few months. I will get in touch with you if you still remember me... lol!

OK Snowqueen. Less games are better in the long run...

Avatar of Good-KnightJoe

FeartheQueen: That would be impossible. A TT is set by time. To my dismay I have lost a lot of points many times because I took too long to solve a problem...

Well that isn't even slightly true.

So, how?

Avatar of Good-KnightJoe

I didn't realize his rating was that high. A rating of 3424 in a couple of weeks? Wow... how in the world did he do that?

I can see Fear_the_Queen's point, but who knows, maybe 1random has discovered a "secret" that that surpasses Magnus Carlsen's ability, therefore he desperately needs to share with the rest of us pawns. lol!

I do.

Online chess sucks anyway who wants to wait 3 days for a move and most players there are overrated.

You don't know becoz you never try. This is a 5 days game. I am very satisfied with my moves that I can't possibly produce in blitz. They were quality moves. Well, I missed here and there but not major problema.

Is this a game you are playing right now?

Avatar of netzach

It has the result (1/2, 1/2) so don't think so.
