Hi all.
I have a few questions regarding USCF ratings.
1. I have not played in a USCF tournament since 2018 and am participating in my first tournament again this weekend. Will my rating fluctuate a lot more than it typically would since I have not playing in a few years?
2. How does the rating supplement work? It appears that for an April rating supplement it would be your rating in March. Is this correct?
3. How is a rating floor obtained? Is there a minimum rating a player has to hit before rating floor is achieved?
4. A few of my friends have picked up chess this past year and want to participate at Supernationals in May. However, they do not have a USCF rating yet. Would an online USCF rated tournament work to obtain a rating so they do not have to play in the unrated division?
Thank you for your feedback!
1. No, the US Chess rating formula doesn't use a rating deviation value like the site.
2. Monthly rating supplements come out on the third Wednesday of a month and become active the 1st of the following month. In your example, events starting in March should use the March supplement and events starting in April would use the April supplement.
3. Rating floor is based on your highest rating achieved after an event and range from 1200-2100. To get a floor you have to achieve a rating 200-299 higher than the floor. Getting an established rating of 1400-1499 will gain a 1200 floor and your rating will never drop below the floor.
There is a 2200 floor but it's based on at least 300 games at or above 2200
4. You would need to check with the organizers for Supernational to see how the would handle official online ratings in regards to sections, if the regulations don't already have that information.
