Why is it, sometimes during a match when ive just taken the lead my opponent goes on vaction, suspect I tell you, suspect!!

artfizz

When you've worn them down, they realise how much they need a break?

I do note that they usually come back, and make a move before the vacation time is up. I guess they are hoping to catch you by surprise, and win by a time out. Sneaky. But all is fair in love and war.

Be sure to welcome him back with checkmate when he returns from his trip or cruise!

One and a half year necro on an overdiscussed topic. Nice.

There are some passionate people on this subject. One must realise the use of illogical abusive Ad hominem to substantiate arguments rather tends to 'colour' their own character, not the subject originator.

It'a all right. Eventually, after their vacation time runs out, they lose the game. So don't worry.

Ubik42

This is dumb.

I have usually 15-30 games going at a time. I just took some vacation.

Some games I was winning, some losing, some drawish. Just the same as before I took vacation.

Maybe someone is so egocentric as to think their one little game is the only one that matters.

uffruffEccekio

Does an IQ of 42 really help though?

uffruffEccekio

Aww! I have an IQ of 15 but then I am only a little cat.

Haha. Ich habe dich, lieb. (Gotcha sweetie)

Seriously though. I got flooded in Brissie earlier this year. I now realize that I could have used the vcation time. So. I would have gone on vacation, in games that I was both winnning and losing. However that comes into the "could'a, would'a, should'a", category. At that stage I was not aware of how the option worked.

I just hope this gives some of you a different slant on things. Strange as it may seem, some of us occasionally, are too existentially occupied, to worry about chess. I actually don't even own a Chess-set anymore. Can you picture it when a friend comes over? There I am on my PC, and there he is on his laptop, sitting in the same room, playing each other.

But. "Tis an ill wind that blows no one any good". The hit my ratings took, has enabled me to spring a surprise on a few, in games we have since played.

I guess we all have this problem - the computer rates me at about 2000 on the games I win. But about 2 on the games I lose. I usually simply hang a piece, or make a total miscalculation.. If I could just purge those stupid mistakes from my game. (Dream on)

But there are also people that try to game the system.  I'm not talking about the frivolous complaints.  I'm talking about the attempts to game the system.  Cases where the gamer has such a bad position that the world champion would resign it even if his opponent were a beginner -- and yet the gamer is using his vacation time to draw out the game as long as possible.  That used to be allowed, apart from a possible adjudication.  Now the gamer doesn't  have the option of going in and out of vacation mode for very long.  No one is allowed to have so much vacation time that they could be a nuisance like that for very long.

Thankfully the owner was wise enough to clamp down on the abuse that used to exist.

I would say you cant even do this.

When you go on vacation you do it for all your games. When you come off vacation, you come off for all your games. You cannot pick and choose.

So if I go on vacation and someone says :

"Oh look, InvisibleDuck was getting hammered in game #27!"

Well, so? What about games 1-26 and 28-35?

If I come out of vacation to answer up game 27, I have to do it for all my games. Suddenly I am not on vacation, suddenly I am playing chess again. What was the point of vacation, then, I must have forgotten; too busy playing chess.

The only case where using up time is even bad sportsmanship is in live games, because the winnner has to hang around the dead opponent for 10 minutes while the loser goes off for a sandwich. But in an online game, no reason to care. You shut the computer down and go about your business.

Kernicterus

I have to agree with InvisibleDuck and IMDeviate.  The truth is...you don't know what the person is doing.  They might be stalling, sure.  They may not be.  Who cares...don't waste your time wondering about it.  They have their time, period.  You go do something else with yours.
