I'm a Vietnamese myself and I don't have the word Nguyen in my name. No, not everyone in Vietnam is called Nguyen. It is not a family that represents the whole country either. Nguyen is simply a very popular family name in Vietnam. Around 38% of the population has this first name although they are not relatives. Anyway, a Vietnamese name consists of the family name, middle name, given name respectively. Because so many people share the same family name, we always use the given name to distinguish/call people in everyday conversations.

I found this thing about the Vietnamese Chess Olympiad team at Tromso and I'm curious to know. All the players in the team are named Nguyen. I want to know if its a family representing a whole country or is everyone in Vietnam called Nguyen
