I don't think it's overhyped, i personally liked the series

Didn't she only ever lose to Spassky (or whoever)? Why? Never had a draw. Huh? Didn't appear to develop her skills at all between the ages of 9 and 15, so much so that she was still reading the same book? She beat a master (and as far as we know, everybody else she ever played) whilst she was unrated, but later on stated that she was "now over 1800". That last one almost had me stop watching it right there.
The realism was just so lacking... Also, the b**** didn't pay a nice man $10 (quite a lot of money back then) that she owed him, which really irked me. The ending was just weird. Spassky was so over the top with his congratulations that I kept thinking it was going to show her waking up.
Why did they have to cast such an ugly woman and then spend half the movie saying how pretty she was? That was just weird. Why did they make so many characters complete c***s when you first met them, then turn them into being nice for seemingly no reason? They under represented the sexism, which isn't the end of the world, but why did they have to compensate so strangely for that by making everybody such a d*** towards beginners (rather than women).
I liked the pro Russian sentiment very much, made me feel all warm and fussy inside
, even if it was OTT. The Americans just cared about beating the Russians, but the Russians just cared about the game. I love it when the Americans are the bad guys, you don't see it enough ![]()
It was OK. I'm glad I watched it.
I was expecting more chess... there was almost no chess positions in the series.... only a bit in the last episode..... and many of the scenes and dialogues i found to be annoying...

In the book, she does express feeling awful for never paying back Mr. Schibel his $10.
They actually utilized a lot of professional chess players and the moves that you can see on the camera are actual games being played out. I watched some mini "behind the scenes" thing on Netflix and some articles on it.
I think the initial author, Walter Tevis, wanted a contrast between how fragile a mind can be. Maybe I look at it at a psychological basis, but Beth had a lot of losses in her life and utilizes Librium and alcohol to cloud her mind. You have a fragile mind, but a prodigy mind at the same time.
I liked it. I watched it with my entire family, so maybe it was more pleasant for me. I like the story. During the series I would try to call out all the openings they played. It was fun. I benefited from the series in other aspects of my life too. At school after this series everyone started to play chess and so I became their idol, which I REALLY like
I again watched the documentary Bobby Fischer against the world.
Loved it. Honestly, 5 times better than the TQG series for me.
I don't understand how TQG has a higher imdb rating than the documentary.....
If it wasn't about chess, I wouldn't have finished it. If looked at purely as a TV show (apart from the chess), well, it's not bad, but not nearly good enough to justify the attention and praise it got. So yeah, I think it's overhyped.
Who knows what Kasparov would have endorsed lol. From everything I've ever heard about the guy, please correct me if I'm wrong, he has no foot in reality himself. He's the epitome of an egotistical moron. He lost a world championship match against a far inferior Kramnik, simply because his ego refused to let him play any way other than how Kramnik wanted to play. He then again insisted on playing sharp chess against Deep Blue, famously losing to a computer before they were top level. What kind of a special idiot does these things? These should have been both easy wins for him. He did stuff like that all the time. He fell out with FIDE. He failed at politics. Etc. The man is a complete idiot. Who's to say he what he consulted on or was happy with? I believe most of the chess moves on the show have been wildly praised. The series was very pro Russian and the chess we saw was good. I'd guess he was very happy with that.
As for Anya, well, each to their own I guess. I personally don't see any appeal in the "helpless deer" look.
I know what Kasparov would have endorsed, little fella. Because unlike you, I know what it is I'm talking about. The only "lol" here is your mindlessness. I have the entire collection of Kasparov books and am intimately familiar with his values and ethics. Let's not even get into the fact that I'm 2300+ and you can't even make it to 1700, LOL!
Right... Yeah, I'm not going to read past this. Oh look, your account was made yesterday. What a surprise!
I just watched the series The Queens Gambit....
To be honest i didn't like the series very much.... maybe it was overhyped?
Anyone share similar views on the series? What is your opinion of the show?
