AdBlock is very handy at times, but it's kind of beside the point.  If people really are getting infected by visiting this site then it is a major problem.

To be blunt, I think Chess.com's attitude towards ads is wrong.

For example, not only are several people claiming to have been infected by Chess.com ads, but also I've noticed a lot of pop-ups/pop-unders (which is quite a shady practice, characteristic of slightly dodgy sites, not big sites like Chess.com) and recent ads about Russian mail-order brides (rather unethical ads to allow on this site).

And Chess.com doesn't seem particularly bothered.  For example, no Chess.com staff member has responded to this thread.  If this were my site, I would be embarrassed about this thread, and I would post in it immediately letting users know I'm looking into this issue.  Sure, this thread is fairly new, but Chess.com staff have been online while it's been at the top of the list.  And when I made a thread about the pop-up ads months ago, again I got the impression that Chess.com didn't particularly care.

For so long I've been recommending Chess.com to people on other forums, but I'm starting to become hesitant.

(And for those thinking of replying, "Just become a premium member," I would like to point out that this issue is one of the key reasons I am not a premium member on Chess.com.  I am a premium member on another chess website.

Anyway, sorry for being a little harsh, but sometimes you have to be in order to get a point across.)

The only way to do that is to have premium membership (which is a !! move)

Nope, AdBlock (a Firefox add-on) does the job. However, you're not supporting chess.com that way.

I'm running Ubuntu so I'm not particularly worried about viruses, but reading all these posts makes me consider getting AdBlock again (which I had on my Windows OS for security reasons).

I can't afford a membership, so it's only fair if chess.com gets at least the ad revenue, but I will not compromise the safety of my computer (though again, Ubuntu tends to be very safe).

There are many trojans nowadays that are not visible for main firewalls, especially encrypting viruses, that ensort money for decryption. recently noticed one interesting Japanese source http://sakujosuru.jp/guides/vvv-file that claim to identify this thread and disarm.
