Vision for real board vs online

How important is it to practice with a real board, if one wants to succeed in OTB events? It seems like this would be a key factor. When playing online everything is flat and bird's-eye view. When I play online a lot and then go to the weekly chess club and play OTB, I think I play worse partly because I'm used to the 2D view.
