Was Bobby Fischer an extrovert or an introvert?

I was wondering if Bobby Fischer was an extrovert or an introvert?

I bet the majority of GMs are extroverts.

I think Bobby was an extrovert:

1) Extrovert tend to be more successful than Introverts

2) Extroverts focus on the people and the outside world.  That is why he was so good.  He was able to focus on the chess board and pieces, the lighting in the room, and also psychologically destroy his opponents.

3) Extroverts focus on the outside.  Bobby was in good physically condition and he exercised a lot.  He did not stay at home and watch movies on his couch all day to exercise.

4) Also, He talked a lot in interviews especially those radio interview.

Extroverts also good at look at the outside world instead of taking things internally.  Plus they like physical activities.  Bobby was dancing at the 1992 return match with Spassky at a post match celebration (this was covered during an interview by Cathy Forbes in a GM Magazine dvd)

1. Only in places where people skills are important !

2. He was so good because he focused on chess, not other people or outside world ! Also his talent played a big role.

3. Exercise has got nothing to do with either Extr. or Intr. They can both exercise !

4. Introverts can talk too !

And what the hell has outside world to do with chess?

All he ever needed was an audience to gawk at him.

I'm curious why you think the majority of GM's would be extroverts.  I think the percentage would be overwhelmingly introverted...probably over 95%.  They're all socially awkward nerds... Tongue Out

Jouzer

yeah, if you watch the fischer documentaries out there, especially the one with live footage from him, you can certainly tell that he was not comfortable with the interviews and I think they even mentioned that he resisted doing the inverviews mostly. He was one of a kind in this world.

good stuff though, check it out. Bobby Fischer against the world, and there was some 1 else too I think

It IS kinda weird, as a chess fan, when you're watching a master's tournament, or the masters play.  Because while the gaming is going on, it's like you're watching gods, but, then when it's over, and the masters start talking, and reacting with the outside world, haha (& I dont mean this in a mean way)  they are SUCH dorks haha

He was a one man slaughterhouse.

Most adult GMs I've seen seem just like regular people. I wouldn't use the words shy or awkward at all.

He is text book definition introvert. 0_o

what is text book definition for introvert

you have to focus on outside world because chess you play in the outside world and not in your head

like einstein was an introvert because all of his theories came up in his head and imagination

most gms are probably extroverts because they have to use their eyes to look at the chess board and move pieces

It's not a text book, but it should help clear up some of your confusion.  Your current percieved definition of 'introvert' seems like it would exclude any living human being.  I believe that Bobby Fischer was extrememly introverted.

heyRick

well, consider that the man was a recluse for many years. And even back when he was younger, before mental illness got the better of him, to me he always seemed shy and I'll at ease. At least that's how the poor man came across to me

@OP Yeah I think you should do more reading on Introvert/Extrovert....they are not what you think they are.  None of your points regarding Fischer have anything to do with whether one is extroverted or introverted.  Moving chess pieces because they are external/outside of your body implies nothing about being introverted or extroverted....and just because Einstein or any other genius has found their ideas in their mind doesn't mean they are introverted, either.

Here's a simple definition:

Extroverts derive energy through external/social interaction; lose energy when alone.

Introverts derive energy while alone; lose energy through external/social interaction.

So you think that introverts are blind and don't use their eyes ? Lol

You do understand that chess is a thinking game right ? Chess players move pieces in their minds first, only after on the chessboard. That is where introversion comes in handy.

Bobby Fischer revolutionized Chess! He was one man army against the Russian state sponsored Grand Masters! Ordinary people like us cannot judge him!

He was an introverted extrovert.

Tal1949

Try telling Regina that he was extroverted. The poor woman would come home from a 12 hour shift and find Bobby in an empty room playing chess by himself. The lights were all left off and her son had moved closer to the window so that he could see the pieces.

She would turn on the lights- "Bobby, have you done your homework?" No. "Have you eaten anything yet?" No, Mom.

Extroverted. Ha!

Rickett2222

He was alone and did not care about the outside world as he lived in his own world so he was not only but predominently introvert which means closed.

Iluvsmetuna

Bobby scared the werewolves from New York.

Rickett2222

He also outfoxed the artic foxes in Iceland that have been there before the Vikings about 12 centuries ago.
