Could not en passant? (Something weird going on..)

Now, I know that a lot of chess players don't understand the en passant rule. As @vladimirherceg91 said very eloquently in his excellent blog post, the en passant rule is a must know for every advanced/strong player.

However, in the following game, my opponent played a move, and I tried to respond with en passant, but it wouldn't work! I was sure it was a legal move, and I kept trying to make the move, and it kept failing.

Eventually I timed out (it was a speed game). I'm positive my opponent was cheating - here is the position:

The trolls who pretend to not know the rules of chess.

It's white to move, and I kept trying to do en passant, since black's last move was ...c5.

How do I report my opponent for cheating?

Cherub trolling really doesn't suit you!

Trolling? You didn't answer any of my questions, and just accuse me of being a troll? I think everyone can see for themselves who the real troll is.

Yes, but the Ra7 makes the Bf7 useless.

Please try to expand your board vision.

C-E, I think you were Mike Shannon all along!

Yeah wtf man that guy must be cheating. I reported him already.

For the patzers who think that the d5 pawn is pinned, please read the rules. The bishop pinning the d5 pawn is effectively useless because it's pinned by the rook first.

According to the rules, a pin is nullified if the pinning piece is also pinned.

Learn your chess you morons.

Yes, but just like the rule where you can't walk into check with your king, even if the would be checking piece is pinned, you can't take en passant by the same rule.

Ofc someone with your low rating would say something so stupid.

Dude this trolling is beneath you your rated 2150 approx and are trying to pretend you don't know how a pin works.

You're either a troll or a really stupid moron. Wouldn't be surprised considering your abysmally low ratings.

Avatar of iKeemstar

LOL if you were so knowledgeable then why is your rating so damn low?

Avatar of Cherub_Enjel

Thank you iKeemstar. There needs to be action against cheaters here on chess.com!

This should be interesting. People talking about cheating usually gets the topic closed, but in this case there was no cheating, so we will see if anything happens.

I believe that even though the bishop is pinned, the pawn is also pinned by the bishop and if you en passant, the white king would be in check so even though the the bishop is pinned, the it can still give checks to the kings. I may be wrong though so please forgive me.

You are wrong, but I do forgive you.

This reminds me of when I attempted to argue with a former friend of mine.  The guy told me I needed to be a physics major in order to know that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted, and that energy you aren't using needs to be converted to "stored energy," else it will simply be lost, and the conversion process would cause us to lose a lot of the energy.  All basic stuff, but according to him, I needed to be a physics major to know that.  Yup, all chess players must be 2000+ to know about castling an en passant, sorry Ikeemstar, but this rules you out as well.  Only Cherub or someone else with a high rating can give us an actual answer.  All other answers are simply unqualified assertions!

Exactly. En passant is an advanced topic. I highly suggest you all study it carefully.

You're an idiot!

That Bishop can be pinned in multiple ways.  Absolute pin to the King and Relative pin to the Queen by a Rook in the cross direction.

Doesn't matter!  You can't put your King in Check!  If capture the King were legal, then Bishop takes White King and Black wins.  Capture the King in blitz or Checkmate in normal chess ENDS THE GAME!  No retaliation move for the opponent!

Sheesh - all these clowns on chess.com that don't understand what freaking check is!  Time for you to take up Tic Tac Toe instead!

Chess.com policy does not permit discussion of cheating in the public forums, so I have changed the title of this thread from "Was my opponent cheating?", as that title was only going to attract comments on that topic.

Thanks,

As compromise, I've also edited the topic a bit.

I hope we both find this acceptable.
