WCC location is unfair to Caruana

As some of you may be aware, in November later this year Fabiano Caruana will challenge Magnus Carlsen for the title of World Chess Champion, in a match that will take place in London. Many chess fans around the world are no doubt looking forward to the match. But let it be known beforehand that the match will not be a fair one, as the location FIDE has chosen for it inherently advantages the reigning world champion, at the expense of the challenger.

Let me explain. Carlsen, according to the latest reports I could find, currently lives in Haslum, Norway. The distance between Haslum and London is approximately 714.3 mi/1149.6 km. Caruana, on the other hand, plays for the Saint Louis Arch Bishops in the Pro Chess League, so assuming that is where he lives, the distance between St. Louis and London is 4205.0 mi/6767.3 km. In other words, Caruana has to travel 6 times the distance as Carlsen to play in the World Championship!!! In no way can this arrangement be considered fair. Essentially, the match takes place in one contestant's backyard, but for the other it is the other side of the world.

What makes this year's choice of location all the more disturbing is that it continues a trend of favoritism toward Carlsen ever since he became the reigning world champion. In 2014, his match with Vishy Anand took place in Sochi, Russia. Then in 2016, when there was a Russian challenger, it was moved to New York City. Now, with an American challenger, the match will be played in Europe. At this rate, in 2020 Carlsen (assuming he takes advantage of FIDE's favoritism to once again defend his title) will be playing against Mickey Adams in a pub down the street from Carlsen's house.

This favoritism is truly sad considering that it is not difficult at all to find a location that is equally accessible to both players. Taking this year as an example, the organizers simply need to take world map, draw a straight line between Haslum and St. Louis, and host the match at the exact midpoint on that line. It's elementary geometry, really. But then again, I probably should not be too surprised that FIDE is screwing up even the simplest tasks that it tries to take on. Like favoritism for Carlsen, screw-ups for FIDE have long since been a persistent and unfortunate trend.

I'm not the only one who thought that the match placement if unfair? Glad I'm not alone :P

Well, Carlsen is the reigning champion... so he is the home team, right?

Strangemover

They should play at a location equidistant from each of their bases. Perhaps on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic.

Caruana is going to win, regardless of the location; this is the first time Carlsen is playing high caliber player and Carlsen falter under pressure. Caruana is good enough to hold the one point advantage in 12 games match and Carlsen will never catch up.

RoobieRoo

London is a cold city, no street people, totally unfriendly.

SeniorPatzer

Carlsen beat Anand for the World Chess Championship Title in Vishy's hometown of Chennai.

@ TheTacticalMagician, Anand was too old when he played Carlsen and Karjakin was never 2800, but Caruana was 2800 and very dangerous player. Carlsen doesn't do well under pressure, 12 games match doesn't leave for mistakes and one game can decided the match. Caruana is the favor, he is younger and hungrier for the title.

you over-patriotic Americans are so hilarious. no, the location is not unfair, Caruana has plenty of time to adapt to it.

yureesystem

Anyway whoever win the match, this will be an exciting match, one who hungry for the title and the other one defending his title; it will be a blood bath. If Carlsen defend his title successfully, it will be his greatest achievement.

RoobieRoo

Caruana will beat Maggie for sure.

Would you like to elaborate on that statement, illiterate European?

cfour_explosive

as I am not illiterate and my statement should be fairly obvious, no. happy.png ask someone kind to explain it, I'm sure someone can help you. don't call them illiterate, though, that might seem rude to some people.

To WhatAbuotBob, Post #7:

You just like to tell stories, right?  This didn't happen? ... or did it?  I don't know Trent, but he came off as arrogant and condescending during the official FIDE streaming of the Candidates.

Seems they are buds again now.

Oh, you aren't? It seemed only reasonable for me to conclude that you were, seeing as you don't read things before responding to them. But ok, maybe I'm wrong, and you're just lazy.

Caruana lives in Lugano, Switzerland, which is closer to London than Oslo.

Fabi is Italian. Carlsen has about 100 mile advantage.

@ TheTacticalMagician, This is going to be very exciting match. We both Americans and I hope you are ruling for Cacuana. If Cacuana wins this will do a lot for chess in America. happy.png

Damn right. Poor Fabi will have to travel for so long and will be jetlagged. Preparation is key in these games and Fabi will be losing at least two days due to the jetlag and travelling.

Very biased decision from FIDE.
