I must have learnt movements when I was about 9, the same as you. I started actually playing chess more than about twice a year when I became 15. I've just become 16.
What age did you start playing chess?

i learned chess when I was 10 year old & playing it often somehow, without any knowledge. but when I came to this site I was learned more & more & understand about openings. I really improved my chess on chess.com only.

I think I started playing when I was about 12. I played a bit through high school and actually helped form a chess club. That was during the Spassky - Fischer match. I didn't play much during college but started studying more in the 1980s. Life took strange and mysterious turns during the '90s and I didn't play much. Just recently I got my good set out of storage and started playing again. It looks like it's going to be a while before I'm near my old level.

I never learned to play chess..
LOL...there are days I'd swear the same was true here...
Learned from my father at 6 or 7, played off and on since then (40yrs)
I learned the basic movements at 9 y.o. Later I went to a couple of school tournaments but I quit very soon.
Then I have started again here at chess.com when I am 34, and I can say it's the first time I am truly learning and enjoying chess.
