What are some good openings?

Have you discovered the chess.com study plans? They're listed under "learn" at the top of the page. Most important is to get the principles of the opening down before trying to learn specific openings, however they do list 5 or 6 common openings that would be fine for you to learn now, but only 5 moves deep. Good luck with your chess career.

coolbluesky, the best opening under the sky is king's indian defense. but that's against d4. if you get really addicted to king's indian defense as i am sure you will, then you would want to play the pirc against e4.
playing as white is a lot simpler so no point debating that. if you play e4 then go for ruy lopez or open sicilian.
if you play d4, avoid nimzo indian and go for the catalan.

well the most common opening is 1.e4... followed by 1... e5
here's some openings:

Sorry to say but this person is not what she/he pertends to be. The picture is of a young girl killed in a boating accident in 2010.
I think I know who is the imposter but will not say unless I have more proof.

Openings should be far from your mind, and your time would be better served studying middle game themes such as weak squares, pawn structures, tactics, and activity. If you know sound chess principles then good openings will naturally follow. I read that you really shouldn't be concerned with openings until class A, otherwise you'd just be a booked up fish.

Agreed with the poster above that white has more leeway, which is why I typically study thinking system and game analysis studies from the black side.

I've been advised that until I get much better, a deep study of particular openings is not the best use of my time. Better, I've been told, to study tactics, then maybe end-games (of course, learning first the basic opening principles).
I agree with this. All the great Russian Grandmasters were not allowed to study openings untill they were over, I believe, 2200 points. They were only allowed to play The London System. It is usualy referred to as "the boring system" or "the old man's game". But it worked for many many Russian masters to get their Master's rating.

I recommend this as white:
As for opening with black, I would recommend responding to 1. e4 with e5 or perhaps e6 (French Defense, which is a bit more complex). I would advise responding to 1. d4 with d5, or e6 if you decide you like the French; by playing 1. d4 e6, you're hoping that White will play 2. e4 and transpose into the French mainline. I don't think you'll see any other first moves from white at your level, so that should be sufficient.
I prefer the open structures of 1. e4 to the closed ones of 1. d4, but that's really a personal thing. I put 1. e4 openings above; if you try them and don't like them, try experimenting with 1. d4.
