What are you thinking when playing chess?

Just finished a game and lost due to tunnel vision. I could have won an undefended rook, but was too worried about defending my isolated queen pawn (IQP).

Dan Heisman says to look for checks, captures and threats, in that order, for both sides. If I had looked for captures, I would have won a rook, and possibly the game.

Besides Heisman's tip, which he calls real chess (not hope chess), what do you think about before making a move? Not in a slow game ( 60 to 120 minutes per side), where there is time to think of many things, but in a 15 10 to 30 0 game?

blueemu

I usually think of dinner.

Heisman's advice isn't bad, though.

DefenseF0x

Take time, and ask yourself... 'What threats is he/she making?", "What threats can I make, or do I already have one and can increase the threat into a bigger problem?" "What is my oppenent threatning after 'this move'"

etc., this all seems like nothing, but I AM SERIOUS, I saw a FM that actually does this. I got suprised, I keep forgetting due to time, so I think you should practice without time.

DefenseF0x

I think of this ^ when i don't forget.

It should work pretty much for all time controls.

Can titled players (FM, IM, GM) perform this kind of blunder check (looking for checks, captures and threats) in a 3 0 to 5 0 blitz game? I would imagine that Heisman's tip is not completely possible in bullet chess (1 0), and the players rely mostly on pattern memory and intuition.

At what rating range do you think that bullet chess is mostly educated guess work and luck?

Not sure what you mean about seeing an FM actually thinking about threats, etc. I must be reading your post incorrectly. Please explain again what this FM is doing that surprised you. Thank you.

Maybe he talked to you after the game, telling you what he was thinking? Or maybe you were tracking his eye movement?

DefenseF0x

Well, he said that every game he plays he says to himself normal threating questions for an example; "Is my oppenent threatning something?" and I always thought masters don't do that, instead they actually do!

The first thing I try and think is

"Remember to think first."

this is the most difficult step to remember.

I read DH stuff too.

One good place I found to practice his "checks, captures and threats' advice  is with tactics problems. Since they quite often involve checks, captures and/or threats. And, if you don't focus too much on your tactics ratings, you can take all the time you need to practice this process.

Another of my favorties he talks about is looking for moves that leave you AT LEAST as good as you assess your current position to be.

kleelof

Oh... and don't get me started on tunnel vision....

I had this problem BIG TIME before I started studying. I still fall victim to it sometimes. But advice like "checks, captures and threats" have helped a lot.

"How the hell did I get myself into this mess???!?!"

Yes. Players much below can, so titled players certainly can.

I typically think, "oh please don't let them see that winning move."

King_of_pawns

Usually something like this...."If I move here, they'll take that but if I go there I'll be in trouble over there and if I do that I'm not sure where that will lead me, so, wait a minute, no, that won't work...I don't think it will at least, so let's see....oh heck with it, do that and just go for it. Man. It's almost like you're reading my mind.

Come on, what kind of stupid question is this?

If you are thinking about anything other than the game and position you are playing, you are not a chess player!  You're a Wood Pusher!

Is 'wood pusher' an euphemsim for man hoe?

I'm more concerned about losing to the 12 year-old in my section than the cute woman.
