You mean the egg, the first chicken still had to be born from the ass of the proto-chicken.  If we get into the discussion of at what point the egg (which from the species point of view is definitely a chicken) gains chickenhood we'll run into a whole bunch of trouble from Americans obsessed with abortion and the staff will have to lock the thread.

 Yes, what I referred to there as the proto-chicken.  Evolution isn't the magical transformation of one animal into another, the mutation to the genetic code has to occur in the formation of the single cell stage to be replicated into all cells, hence the egg coming first.  It's a fairly arbitrary distinction we draw, since the proto-chicken and chicken could have interbred, meaning they were really of the same species, and what happens is genetic drift in geographically isolated populations to produce a new species, but whereever you draw the arbitrary genetic line separating chicken from protochicken, the egg comes first.

Evolution is too slow a process to accurately tell which is first. There was no real distinction between the chicken and what it was before it evolved because I'm sure a chicken did not just jump out of a T-Rex egg.

When it was just near being a chicken, one scientist would have called it a chicken already while another might want to wait a few thousand years before calling it a chicken.

Opinion is what make the distinctions.
