Most of the suggestions involve having people around. Who wants an aged Scotch or Merlot with a fag or a Cuban by ones self? How about a nice game with Faye Dunaway some vintage chamgagne ;-)
what chess goes good with...

What has merlot to do with homosexuality?

I think so, did I misunderstand anything?

Though I believe the cigar probably tastes better than Vivaldi.
Undoubtedly, although I'll see your Vivaldi and raise you a J.S. Bach.

Ok, J.S. Bach is good.
I don't need to share my good scotch to enjoy playing through an old masterpiece.
(fag = British cigarette)
Surprise surprise surprise don't let Sergeant Carter catch you playing Bach Brandenburg Concerto's and smoking that ganja in the barracks. That masterpiece would that be a 1964 Playboy ;-)) And no singing in the shower there Jim~!

a group of friends and family all vaguely(or intensely, depending on the person) watching the chess game and jokingly talking trash to the players. and hanging outside by a fire, early evening, with bbq cooking.
some good tasty green and a nice rum and coke...
= one of the most fun chess days i've ever had.
i won the "tournament" too :)

A healthy state of mind.
In chess?? Have you seen any of the world champions?

Not all, but I know about all recent champions, they are all very practical, down to earth guys except Fischer. And that was exactly why Fischer lost the crown to Karpov anyway, so his situation is supporting the above statement rather than refute it.
Kasparov could be insanely ambitious, Kramnik may be insanely devoted to chess, Botvinnik may be living the life of an aeschetic monk, Tal exactly the opposite etc, but they all had healthy states of minds when they sat down on the board. I'm not their psychiatrist obviously, but I do know that if you let your opponent get to you, or if you're somewhat distracted mentally, it affects your performance on the board. Your mind needs to be clear of all disturbing emotions and focused, that's what I meant with "a healthy state of mind".
And I wrote that comment right after failing a tactics problem because that was precisely what I was lacking at that moment.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Better yet, a Carmenere and a cigarette.
