If you are on a budget or can't decide what to get, download SCID for free. It is an awesome database program that lets you import playing engines like Crafty and Toga which you can also download for free. Btw, Toga II is super strong. SCID will let you create sub databases. For example, create a data base of B90-B99 Sicilian Defense.

For Chess engines go to superchessengine.com

Then, download the entire available TWIC database. This is also free and will give you around a million games.

If you don't own a computer, buy some informants and an opening manual like Nunns Chess Openings - NCO - or Modern Chess Openings.

And you're set.

I am not on a budget.I can give a few Euros for a program.Thank you all for answering.

there's a download in the ipad app store for the icc chess app as well as the chess.com chess app.

the Chess.com chess app looks WAY better.  the icc one looks old, it also tracks a different rating for you so your rating when logged in through a PC is different than your rating when logged in through the ipad or iphone.  Chess.com, on the other hand, tracks a single rating for you (which I prefer).

I have a premium membership here, and I also have Chessmaster 11.

Although I have heard a few derogatory comments about Chessmaster 11, I have found it to be excellent.

Regarding my question about 960 games I made a forum in the past with very little participation. You can find it here http://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/saving-960-games

I don't think there is any program that plays random960,is there?

Bugnado

Rybka 4 does Chess960.

I have Fritz 12, Chessmaster 10 and 11. Chesmaster 11 ahs worked out a lot of the bugs. However, Chessmaster 10 is the better of the two. Are you looking for a program that does a little of everything? If so, Chessmaster 10 would be a good choice. The answer is going to depend on your level of play and what you want to get out of a chess program.

Chessmaster 9 is ok for me.So,I think that the 10th edition would be a good choice.I want to play against the computer, analyse the games and go through all the lessons it contains.

I used to use Fritz, versions up to 11. It comes with a version of Chessbase that lets you create a database of your own games, and you can then analyze them using the engine. It is very good at showing you what was missed.

Recently I have moved to a new computer, and I have not yet installed Fritz. I think now that it may be better to try to do the analysis myself, without the aid of an engine.

But I do like to store my games on the computer. So after reading this thread I downloaded ChessBase Light 2009. It runs, but it seems as though I can't save games without paying 50 EUR for an activation code. Rather than do that I would probably dig out the Fritz CD and install it again.

Is there a way to keep a database of my OTB games on chess.com? That would be cool.

I ordered chessmaster10 and received it the day before yesterday. It cost 9,99 euros and 5 euros for the portage. Not bad at all!I am happy with my choice.

Almost a year since my last comment.Hello again.I have been enjoying chessmaster 10 until now.I have a question for those who may know. Can I adjust the time controls for a game and make them like a real tournament game?I tried to adjust time at 2hours for me and the opponent and fix the time limit for 40 moves at 90minutes but I can't find how to put them work together.I can only play 2hours game or 40 moves in 90minutes game.

I'm not sure I understand. Do you want two time controls, the first being 40 moves in 90 minutes, and the second time control being the rest of the game in 30 minutes? If so, just choose the 40 moves/90 minutes time control, then check the sudden death box and enter the number of sudden death minutes (30).

So,sudden death is the answer! Thank you EscherehcsE. I'll try it tomorrow.

Hi guys i have created a chess software which is worth $50 - $80 . It is really a special software as you can change the level of the engine from 1600 - 3190 . The most interesting part of it is that no one can detect that you are using a chess software and if your opponent is using a software above 3200 rating then my software can detect it and tell you it's name and it will even ask you an option whether you have to win or lose in that match if you are playing against a 3200+ rated software because in certain sites people are not allowed to use engines . You can get you software over here   https://satoshibox.com/zcrxdcn55wxpy7t5fo8kxu5s
