China. At least a thousand years before India.

No one knows for certain, but it is thought that the game which eventually evolved IN to modern chess came from India initially. Though many believe it originated in China first and migrated to India. Fact is we will never know for certain.

Fact is, it was China, long, long, LONG before India's pitiable Chataranga.

Iraq,  Sumerian culture probably. When the Annunaki Gods came to Earth brought chess

And you have proof of this "fact"? The truth is, no one knows for certain exactly where the game originated.

So another person who belives in the ancient astronaut theory. Interesting

But do any ancient books refer to it?

The game of chess is thought to have originated in what is now northern India or Afganistan sometime before 6OO AD: the oldest written references to chess date from then, but there are unverified claims that chess existed as early as 100 AD.

Chess wasn't necessarily created by a country.

Chinese chess is kinda weird and I don't think they have bishops in India - well not in 600 AD anyway.

Hmmm - Russians are pretty good at chess, maybe it's Russia?

Thanks Mr_Spocky.  What's the earliest written reference or achealogical proof of the board as we know it?

Alien input is something else.  I've read Daniken but prefer Veliskosky.

no one really knows who actually created it, it so old, but its believed to be started in India

Not Afghanistan.

India.

Trace the roots of language.

"Many geographical names and provinces in Afghanistan have roots in ancient Sanskrit."

The capital

Kabul: Derived from Kubha.

Sthan/Stan: The suffix "-stan" (as in Afghanistan, Balochistan) is derived from the Sanskrit Sthan (place or land).

What is the most famous place in China?

The Shaolin Temple.

Where did the Shaolin Temple come from? Grasshopper?

India.

I know a lady from India who thought exactly so.

Chess came from India.

30,000 Sanskrit terms were calqued into Chinese.

Chinese gods are Indian gods.

The four-faced god is Brahma.

The many armed god is Shiva, just like in Mortal Kombat.

There's nothing weird about Chinese chess. Western chess is weird. You are seeing things from The Twilight Zone.

Chinese chess has more genes of Chaturanga than Western chess. Look it up.

Chinese chess is literally called 象棋 Elephant Game.

That is a glyph of an elephant. 4 legs, 1 tail, 2 big ears, and a trunk.

What we call the Bishop was originally the Elephant. Rook, Chariot.

That is a glyph of a chariot. 2 wheels, an axle and a box.

The Charlemagne Chess Set.
