What do you do in a losing position

When you realize you are in a losing position, what actions do you take? Do you try to fight back? Do you fight back until losing is inevitable? Do you go down to your last piece hoping the person doesn't know how to checkmate you or hope you can pull a stalemate/draw? Its kind of a catch 22 because when I'm losing and there's little hope for a come back, I wanna go for the draw, but I know its also annoying to people to stretch out a losing position because at my rating levels people tend not to know how to checkmate so they go to the last piece wanting to see a stalemate... Just wondering what others do in losing positions

Depends on my opponent, the time controls, how badly I'm loosing, and what mood I'm in.

In long games, I play for a few moves to see if my opponent has a clear plan on how to converge the game to victory, and if he does, then I give up.

In short games, I start creating tactical mess to either get them to blunder something, or to try to win on the clock.

Depends how much i am loosing, and how much bad is my position

I curse myself for missing the move or plan that landed me in trouble. Then I search for the most resilient method of continuing the game, firstly avoiding immediate mate threats, losing the least amount of material, potential future counterplay, anything I can do to at least complicate the position and make my opponent make some choices and find good moves to force a win. I actually quite enjoy fighting in a losing position once I have got over the initial irritation of messing up in the first place. Once you know you are lost you can do whatever you want and it's a good challenge to find moves that give you potential chances. I search harder in these positions for the best move than I do in say an equal position with logical moves to play.

It depends.

Sometimes I go and get a coffee to get a new idea what I could do.

Or I go to the toilett getting rid of the coffee I had during the previous game.

Or I start a talk with the opponent looking for an idea how that weird person is thinking.

And sometimes I get an idea what I could do and win the game thereafter.

Depends on the position.

Depends on if its the round before lunch.

Usually, in a loosing position,

I loose.

I try to hang in there because when your playing in a weak pool like I do anything can happen.

How badly am I losing? This question is not specified.

I let my clock run.

delcarpenter

I keep playing to win.  If my only hope is for a draw or stalemate then I play for one of those.  I don't resign at a chess board.

I see you haven't lost your trolling skillz happy.png

Im rusty but I think I havent.

Anyways, completely depends on the position and time control. In blitz I will play out until I am almost getting mated or until it is just shameless to keep playing on. Time shortages can do wonderful things for you.

In classical chess again, depends on the position. In my games I usually dont lose in obvious manners like hanging my queen or stuff like that but most of the time it is by giving the initiative or entering a horrible endgame etc... In that case I will obviously play it out if I see there is room for error. If the win is simple, obvious and I cant play for tricks Ill stop wasting my time, stop the clock, shout at my opponent, refuse to handshake and run to my hotel room, saving energy for the next round.

Basically In blitz Im a shameless nutjob while in Classical I am a decent nutjob.

When I was down one or two pawns I often try to get the game messy, and when my opponent started to think I offer a draw in the loudest way or sing a song. This us VERY DISTRIBUTING but it is allowed so I often distract my opponents to try to let them make a mistake.

This is very poor sportsmanship and a good tournament director would not allow this type of behavior.

BronsteinPawn

still shameless, that noobie Huzo should be thrown into jail

If you're losing really badly you should just resign if ur opponent is an idiot or u still have a chance fight back
Rominator425

Depends on my opponent and my position. I will fight to a draw if I know there's absolutely no way of winning but if I know that even a draw is impossible then I resign with dignity.
