Likewise, I listen to faster paced music when I wish to play faster and more tactic-oriented (especially for playing blitz against higher rated players).
To study chess, I like to listen to ambient sounds or non-active music.
Sometimes an opponent will have a bit of mucus stuck in his windpipe, which may produce a slight whistling noise as he breathes. If that is the case, then I just listen to that.
I have a playlist that randomly selects any one of all of music genre. That's how I like my music on most days. I tend to listen at the beginning of the game then somewhere midgame I put the headphones aside. Sometimes, anyway.
I usually listen to the full send podcast or Joe Rogan as well. Sometimes watch the Sidemen or AMP at the same time too.
The voices inside my head, just gotta pick the right on before I move. Redrum is not a chess gambit.

Redrum? As in the Shining?

I like peace and quiet when I play.
Can you have one without the other?
I don’t play well with background music. I was at a rock bar and look at all those red ticks.
Bounced back this morning to redeem myself.
Night and day (literally lol) difference on the performance.

That's fair. I find some background music to be peaceful. I also find the din of a room where a chess tourney in going on to be peaceful. When I'm really in a zone I don't hear anything, so the noise doesn't bother me. On the other hand, I think complete quiet would be a distraction. Some background noise is comforting.

It’s different for everybody.
In rapid, I have to force myself to visualize and calculate deeper so the peace and quietness helps.
With speed chess, it’s all fun and games so I don’t mind music or distractions.
I sometimes listen to the Joe Rogan podcast while I play. I usually play 10 min and yeah I'm sure I forfeit some concentration but online ratings shouldn't be taken too seriously. Can you concentrate while listening to something? do you listen to music? how do you think it affects your game quality?
