What do YOU need to improve your rating?

My biggest problem is that i dont have enough patience to play long games, and i dont know how to improve that. Anyone knows the answer? And other problems are welcome here.

i just got back into playing chess and i'm finding my concentration levels are poor, i always get into time trouble, i have no idea how to play endgames, i panic when i think i may have blundered and i am playing openings without having a clue what i'm doing most of the time.

if i can improve those things my rating should definitely improve :O

I play in rapid tournaments and that's where I want to improve.

My biggest issue is the time scramble; I don't think properly when I have only few minutes remaining on my clock, and I've lost many games from an equal position to due simple blunders because of the time pressure.

I want to improve my time-management skills and I'm also trying to get used to play 5 minutes blitz.

spend some time thoroughly analysing a game or position, either from your own games or from a master game or a book of exercises. getting used to spending a lot of time analysing and calculating variations might well help you out.

Studying endgames and further tweaking my thought process.  The book that most helped my performance was Heisman's Improving Chess Thinker because I learned what good players do differently from me and how and implimenting the thought process isn't that difficult: look at the board, note material and positional imbalances, say who you think is better and why, then move onto potential plans and then analysis.  Good players aren't just players with more knowledge and better visualization and calculation (though they certainly have that going on too), but have a different thinking process.  Don't just improve vertically but horizontally too.

Totally agree with ScorpionPackAttack and was going to post similar advice.

If you have trouble making use of all your time in a slow game, it can only be because you are not thinking about the things you should be thinking about. I also recommend Dan Heisman's writings on thought process, but my favorite work is A Guide to Chess Improvement: The Best of Novice Nook.

Time. I need time to play in tournaments, I need time to review my games, I need time to read some books I've been trying to read all year, I need time to study my openings, I need time to learn how to play end games, I need time to practice seeing tactical patterns and learning new one's. Time. Anybody got some time for me?

Thanks for all the answers,, i will try it all cos its really important for me that i play ( and ofcourse improve ) in longer games. Funny that there are many problems where members NEED more time. plutonia wrote: I want to improve my time-management skills and I'm also to get used to play 5 minutes blitz.

lol, 5 minutes is for me the point where i need to focus and i will lose my focus. So goodluck for 5 mins games for us.

Are there more extraordinary, normally or funny :-) problems?

Pretty much everything.

Phylar

I need more wins...

Considering that, I should probably study now.

In my opinion, having no patience for something is just another way of saying that you don't enjoy it, if it takes you more than a certain amount of time.

You should really assure yourself, if improving actually has to be the main aim here. I can't get past a certain rating barrier myself and probably never will because I'm not willing to invest more time in chess than I already do.

Just enjoy it as much as you can and don't force yourself would be my advise. If you have the passion for the game, improvement comes naturally.

Top-of-my-head suggestions:  (1) Play events with a time increment.  The add-on can make a HUGE difference.  (2) Practice for rapid play with blitz games, playing them solely to get practice in 'blunderproofing' your play.  (3) Do same with the "Tactics Trainer"  here.  (4)  Get so you can play basic ENDGAMES -  the basic mates, K+P endings, key techniques of rook endings - almost "on automatic."  Practice with lots of repitition is vital with these.  (5)  When in time trouble,  try to seek out "sets"  of 2 or 3 safe moves you can make quickly.  Look for time-saving repititions. (Be careful of falling into a draw-by-3x-repitition if you're trying to win!)

Hope some of this helps. . .

Try to reincarnate to a time when I could play chess well.
