It seems to me he wanted just to double every pieces, but this come to the question: did you doubled also the kings? was not better to have a board 15x15 with a single king or 14x14 with single king and queen?
Another thing worth o point out is that with such a board the knights will be much worse than bishops because they will need even more time to move around, so probably knights should move differently...
This variant already exists. It has two kings and is played on a 16x16 board.
Double Chess (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Chess) features a 12x16 board where checkmating either king wins.
Yeah! And pawns can move up to 4 squares on its first move.

to be exact, you posted a 16x16 board picture where doublechess have a 16x12 board, so its not the same.
Anyways, this is not going to be popular. Just like Capablanca chess.
Although it's interesting to look at. I personally like most chess variations because they make you look at many different angles.
