What do you think before you move?

I generally have a plan before every move, then i move and the bugger moves in the wrong position and my plan has to be rewritten, i have books and books of plans and differant gambits. but my opponants don't have the same books.

I find all these to be in a weird order, im trying to work on using these  during the game.

1. What are the threats

2.  Make a plan

3. Analyze (make candidate moves and select best one)

4. blunder check

How can i keep the pressure on and build tension. Oh, and taking the other guys piece is my choice of last resort unless there is a real gain in it for me.

1. Gather general information about the position:  Are there any threats my opponent is making against me that I must reply to?  What threats can I produce against my opponent?  Look for undefended pieces, possible forks, trapped pieces, skewers, etc., or any other tactical patterns I notice.  Also, what is my opponent trying to do in this position long term, and what am I trying to do?

2. Think about some possible tactical moves I'd like to make.  Imagine what my opponent could do to me if I made that move, trying to rule out blunders.  If I find a nice tactical move then I might just do it.

3. If I can't make any tactics or threats, and I'm not in immediate danger, then I just look at how to improve the position of my pieces and try to make sure those moves are tactically safe.  Maybe most of the time I never get to step 3 because chess is pretty tactical once you're out of the opening.

4. Usually steps 1-3 are all I do in an online game due to time constraints.  But if I'm solving puzzles with no time pressure, I have some other tricks to try:

For example, maybe I'm trying to mate the king, but to mate him I need to cover the h8 square.  And the only plausible way to cover that square is with a knight on f7, so I need to work backwards to figure out how to get the knight to f7.

Or I can ask "what if I could move twice in a row, what tactics would I be able to use then?"  That can sometimes give me more hints about where the threats are.

Meh, that'll do.

1)  Is the clock straight?

2)  God, I wish I could get that stupid song out of my head.

3)  Did my opponent actually train somewhere to get to be that distracting and annoying?  Like at some secret Russian institute or something?

4)  After this...Burger King or McDonald's?

5)  Will 3 pawns fit in one square without touching the borders?

Thoughts that I have had:

1. Did I leave the iron on?

2. Man, I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

6)  Damn, that guy is fat.

3. Who is the chick over there, and, wait, what am I doing?

7)  God, everyone in this room looks like a dork.

3. If I post this game on c.c, will I get any helpful, relevant, or nice comments about it, or, will it just be spammed?

RichColorado

I posted two post as to what and how I think when I make a move and play a chess game.

Here is a link to one of them:

4. I just hope I don't lose to that Purple Ant guy, he'll post it and make fun of every one of my freakin moves.

AlCzervik

I'm scared of purple ants.

So weird! I do the same thing and I am now up to a 112 average!

Another thing that helps sometimes with tactics is to think about a forcing line that ALMOST works, but then try to figure out how to "fix" the line so it REALLY works.  For example, one way to fix it might be to change the move order, or to add in a zwischenzug.

I thought we had moved on to bowling and purple ants.
