What do you think GM Hikaru IQ is?

And on the actual test he took in public he scored 102. Baseless vague estimates aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Glad to see we have a poster with such great psychic powers that he can tell what people he never met are thinking and sense the IQs of anonymous internet audiences.

No, as I don't start from a baseless, disproven assumption that chess ability and IQ are closely linked. You should realize that IQ test scoring takes into account not only the correctness of the answers, but how many questions are answered within the allotted time; you cannot get a very high IQ test score if you don't answer the questions "very quickly".

It was an online test not administered by a professional. Maybe not baseless, but a weak base.

If you read this forum you will find references to several studies that show a SMALL correspondence between IQ and chess ability.

The link you provide shows results from tests used to measure children's personality development, NOT IQ. You make the common mistake of equating IQ with general intelligence; IQ testing is an attempt to measure potentialities in some areas of cognitive function, not developed reasoning processes or accumulated knowledge.

I've heard the same thing about the public test Hiraku took, and his IQ score if he took a serious monitored test (as Kasparov did) would probably be somewhat higher than 102, but the blind assumption that being a top chess player is PROOF of an extremely high IQ is baseless and bogus.

I suspect that most titled players, if tested, would fall between 110 and 120, which is very bright, but well within the norms for people who do some sort of mental work.

I play otb classical games three times/week. I have an old, slow computer not well suited to the rapid games chess.com and lichess players indulge in. I do a few puzzles sometime earlier in the day before playing games to get my brain into "chess mode"--I find that after the first few puzzles I find the correct solutions more often and more quickly. I use chess.com primarily to analyze my games and brush up on openings. I didn't use forums until I was stuck at home during pandemic lockdowns.

Again, I agree that there is some correlation between chess ability and IQ. There are also myriad other factors that contribute to chess mastery and cumulatively greatly outweigh IQ in elo rating. What's baseless is the idea that extremely high elo rating MUST indicate extremely high IQ.

numerous peer reviewed studies show a correlation between IQ and chess ability (particularly in problem solving and pattern recognition)
of course, other factors like memory affect chess skill, but to a smaller extent.
even if hikaru does have an average iq, a single isolated score does not disprove the trends. being good at chess isnt proof of high iq. but you have to admit, the skills for being good at chess aligns with what an iq test measures.

so no, these are not "baseless" assumptions.

off topic, but i find your profile interesting. 20k puzzles, 1000 views, gold membership but no games? are you aware you can get unlimited free puzzles on lichess?

From the study: "Given that the correlations were significant for Gf, Gc, Gsm, Gs, it is
somewhat surprising that the correlation was non-significant for full scale
IQ."
Your link is to a summary. The article is behind a paywall. I had university access a couple of years ago and downloaded it then.
Groundless, BTW, are the absurdly high numbers in this thread that would have all top GMs as one in a billion, or thereabouts. It doesn't take much math skill to see how that is impossible.
Moreover, one top GM, arguably the best chess player in the history of the game, took tests that were properly administered by professionals. His scores were 123 and 135. The tests had different scales.

hikaru is more likely to be 180 than 102. it's simple logic

Avatar of crazedrat1000

He's more likely to be 120-150 than either of those options. Another false dilemma

Would a 120-150 IQ have 28 draws against 190 IQ Carlsen in classical games?

Avatar of Quasimorphy

If you're using chess strength to estimate IQ, and Kasparov's IQ is 135, Carlsen might be 145.

What IQ test goes for 3 days? The WAIS IV goes for only an hour.

What IQ test has Carlsen scored 190 on?

do you not find to hard it to believe that the greatest online chess player ever has a mediocre iq? you think you can become like him with practise? watch him take the test. each quesiton, he does very quickly.

YES ABSOLUTELY, IT IS PRACTICE OF TACTICS AND GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME THAT MAKES HIM GOOD! NOT BECAUSE HES SMART OR HAS A HIGH IQ! you are singlehandedly showing your idiocy to the entire world with these outrageous claims. Atleast Nepotamy has an idiot friend with him now!

Imagine thinking Hikaru isn't smart nor intelligent. So delusional.

Hikaru could well be smart, but he isn't good at chess because he's smart, there's a difference, who's the delusional one now? There is FACTUAL ad SCIENTIFICAL EVIDENCE against your bogus and untrue claim. How are you so good at dodging the obvious facts and truth? Calling me delusional...

You don't become a GM and pass 2800 FIDE without being smart.
