current rating is the rating u r at this moment right now. Highest rating is your best rating u got so far. avg.opp.. means average opponent and in this case 1198 which means u played players that when counted together averaged 1198. Best win is self explanitory. its your best win against all the players u played the highest rated win u had. And by now u should know what todays rank is the N/A in this example is None applicable or not enough games to show your rating yet or it was unrated maybe...Cool

I am curious as to how often is the "Today's rank" recalculated.

Before winning my last game my rating was 1627 and rank was 9801.

After winning this game, my rating is now 1701 and rank is still 9801.

Also, a guy with rating 1677 has a rank of 8064, while I have a rating of 1701 and rank 9801 at this point in time.

That would be because it is updated daily, your rank will be changed when you log on tomorrow.

How is the % to be pronounced? Is it percentage or percentile ?

Skand

Maths people, please help me understand how percentile is calculated. My understanding of percentile is 'the percentage of people (or things) one is better than'. For example:

There is a class of 100 students. A test is given where maximum marks are 100. If one student gets 1 mark, another gets 2 marks, third gets 3 marks....100th student gets 100 marks.

Is the percentile of student getting 1 mark 0 ?
Is the percentile of student getting 2 marks 1 ?
Is the percentile of student getting 100 marks 99 ?

Does it mean by definition 100 percentile is simply not possible?

Nytik

Skand - No. We'd say the first student is "in the 1st percentile". Likewise, the second student is "in the 2nd percentile". This works all the way up to the top, where we say that the last student is "in the 100th percentile".

Hope that helps.

Skand

Nytik - do you have a reference link to this?

Skand

There is more to it than meets the eye

http://www.haiweb.org/medicineprices/manual/quartiles_iTSS.pdf

It seems related to probability too not just straight percentage.

After going through some of the heavy stuff in this link, I get a feeling that in my example the student getting 100% marks will have neither 99 nor 100 as percentile.

Essentially I was trying to figure out what the % in today's rating/ranking stands for. Haven't got exact meaning yet - the basic meaning is obvious - that you are in top (100-P)% of the players among chess.com's online players.
