What gave you the biggest elo boost?

I think it would be interesting to hear what forms of learning and training have been consistent accross the chess community in bringing elo. For me My elso has not been something which has been steadily in reading, instead, I seem to hit brick walls, then through training and learning something clicks and I surpass that brick wall with an extra 100 elo points or more. I can confidently say that studying of openings has brought me least elo. And I proved this to myself by experimenting with openings that I had only seen in annotated games but have never truly studied. To my surprise I managed to play at the same level I did in my pet openings. Study of endgames was something which definently took me through an elo brick wall. I win a lot of dull endgames in which my opponents fall asleep in.studying endgames has also given me a deeper understanding of the potential and the limitations of the various chess pieces which I feel also helps in the middle game. However my biggest elo changes have come from going through training where I am trying to change my thinking process. In my early stages,I felt like i had a lot of chess knowledge but I couldn't seem to play at a strong level because I kept blundering. By forcing some changes to my thinking process, in particular looking into the opponents plan and strictly asking myself before I play any move "how can he make my move look stupid" I gained between 100 to 200 points. So to sum up, I feel that I have gained the most elo from endgames, viewing lots of annotated game videos and making modifications to my thinking process. Will be interesting to hear how other people have made progress

I too can vouch for how to reassess your chess. That book laid down a good foundation of understaning chess. More than anything this book has allowed me to enjoy chess as a spectator as I have an understanding of the main battles in a game

When I started playing the Bongcloud my elo jumped 100 points in the opposite direction.

My biggest ELO boost was from not caring about ELO. I do care about my rating sometimes. I am not disciplined enough to not care most of the time. Topalov plays like he could care less. Very inspiring. But when I play like I don't care, I actually gain points!

Great Post, KristianT!

Nothing fancy here! Lots of tactics problems and some hoe brewed analysis of my own games.

Funny when I played the Bongcloud my rating increased by 1000 points.  I eventually became bored with winning so I chose different openings.   My rating dropped back to 1900.
