What Got You Into Chess

Listening to Howard Stern talk about it. Made me remember when I played a bit as a kid. Bought chessmaster then decided to come online to find some real opponents. Chess.com is the site I found. Never really left.

Could you please explain what exactly made you reply in a thread that nobody cared about for 17 years? Just curious

I got into it when my cousins hosted a chess tournament in 2022 I learned the rules in 10 minutes and beat 2 of my cousins and drew two but I only started playing online when I got my uncle (a 1980s 1600) a chess set for his and we played and he destroyed me so I started this account and i got wrecked 2 years ago so I continued playing chess and last summer I was an 800 with a dream I won 5-4 because he hadn’t trained chess in 30 years but by then I no longer played chess to beat my uncle I play for fun I visit him every year and I can’t wait to beat him next summer

Started playing lunch times at work in my 50s and one of colleagues and opponents introduced me to chess.com

Necroposting is interesting. I enjoy seeing the old names and wonder if any are still active. I see some show a "last online" recently and that's cool.

Like many I learned the game early. I never studied much and only played occasionally. Pops and I would get the old board out once or twice a year. A friend would have a board and we may play a game or two. I was playing "chess with friends" which is attached to FaceBook for a while and one day an advertisement brought me here, maybe 2013 or so. Never really looked back, all these accounts later.

I could never beat the old man. After I found Cc and considered myself improving I would challenge him once in a while. Each time learning he was always better than the last time, or better than he ever let on. He passed a couple years ago. About a year before he passed I knew I had improved a lot and we played our last game. About 20 moves in I knew I had him. He made some surprisingly good moves and the end game was tough. Back and forth, pawns marching and kings defending. I am not sure how it ended but I'll never forget the game.
