What happens if both players resign at the same time?
It's November 2023, and we now have a situation where the rules for qualifying for Candidates are so messed up that Anish Giri qualifies for Candidates if he loses to Nepo in the Sinquefield Cup, and doesn't qualify if he wins. Now, admittedly, I can't concoct a scenario where two players facing each other would both be better off losing than winning in terms of pure qualification. But one could easily imagine a situation where A is playing B, and B has to lose in order to qualify for Candidates, and A for whatever reason doesn't want B to qualify, perhaps because A is already qualified for Candidates and A would rather face C in the Candidates than B, where C is the player who would qualify if B didn't. In this case both players would be racing to resign the game.
