To be frank in my opinion; which smells bad, 500, 600, 800, 1000, 3000, or whatever your best average chess rating is.
what is a good chess rating?

Well, there is a difference between a 1200 Elo of someone who plays only 3 min bullets and someone playing 30 min rapid at a lower Elo as 800 for example.
At times, the ones that play Rapid 30 min can win several games in the Classic games and feel more comfortable. But, they can also play badly if they do not play bullets or blitz.
In conclusion, everything is relative. The importance is to have Fun & have the Passion for this Wonderful Game with is: Chess 😌

Really good point, makes me feel a lot better about my crappy rating

Ok I am reading this and i hsrdly dissagre with some opinion. Myne is like this:
Under 800:complet morron for chess. 5 year old kid or Just someone Who cant move pieces(well almost)
800-1000-It is still bad But not so so bad. Ive seen a lot of players around this rating. Just means that you dont chess very often you Just sometimes play it with your friends or so But you know some little stuff for an example how to avoid some mates or so.
1000-1200-Ok this is around normal(avarage statistic) for an active adult player.Well you understand some opening and end game tehnica well you can play chess pretty ok But you still miss pieces a lot and so. Compared to an avarage player Who plays chess(sometimes) you would probably crush him But in any serious comoetition you would be crushed.
1200-1400-Here is where we are getting to a more serious Level. You are not a strong player yet But oyur getting there. You play chess pretty ragulary and its not Just sometimes hoby anymore. You probably understand the openings and end game theory and your brains cells work pretty well during the game. I would say thi is the lowest skill Level player that would be in some more serious tournament so yea your probably a player thats trying to get even better and atends tournament..
1400-1600-This is simply called a strong player. You probably worked pretty hard to get this point and this Level is respectful. You probably know opening and end games pretty well so far. This is already a good tournament player that would occasionaly beat a Master.
1600-1800-This is an excelent player. This is already a type of Level that most chess players will never ever reach. This requires great end game and great opening knowledge. You play very activly for years and you have been probably to many strong tournament and have chess achivment. From this Level I prusome that your chess knowledge of opening end games its should be almost perfect. This is in 97% precentile
1800-2000-This Level is an expert that probably has years of chess experiences behind him. This type of player should be a somebody Who was really into chess and worked really hard. This is close to being a proffesionals and all you have to work on is percting your middle game strategy.
2000-2200-I made a pause because here is where amataures class are over and here is where players that could be possible one of the best players in the world are at. Most poeple at this range are Candidate Master. They have been on so many tournament abd perfect the chess theory and are readdy to be a real proffesional. Those are probably older poeple that worked hard have been into chess so much and made it to the 1st Fide title.
2200-2300-This should bea Fide Master-I would say it is completly the same as Master they were Just poeple Who have managed to win a tournament out of Candidate Master and Got the title. There are lots of Fm at te world campionchips
2300-2500-Internstional Master. This is almost a complet top of chess. Almost completly same title as a grandmaster. If you have Im Master title I suppose your in top 1000 in the world and that you live of chess But still trying But not successful št getting a Gm title.
Grandmaster-Highets title possible that out of more than 600 million active chess players only around 1700 posses it and it is Extremly hard to achive because of a given norms at the tournament. Expert of theory start from 2000 But this player are so much better than them because of there highly focnioning brain and strategies 10 steps ahead.
Ultra Grandmaster-around 200 and are Above 2700.Thise are already top players in the world like former Kasparov and now Carlsen, Anishi Giri, Ding Liren.
And thats my opinion kinda long But Got it through

I am 1200 now. If I arrive to 1800 till the end of my life it is excellent.
My intention in chess is to keep my brain active.
