This is a good question and the topic is very important especially in attack.
"Hooks & Levers are important not only when attacking the opponent's king, but also when you want to open up any file to target weaknesses", Erik Kislik in Chess Logic in practice.
Kislik also define a hook as:
"A hook is an enemy pawn that you can latch on to by using a pawn-lever. That is, attacking it with your pawn, and so forcing open the position."
