Therefore, if the troll has to spend more time trolling than the average person is wasting reading it, then they are trolling themselves and wasting their own time.
Take your average troll who is creating a new sockpuppet every week...case in point, Erik the Viking. Obvious troll from maybe the second post on. Time spent for me being "trolled"...maybe 1-2 minutes being generous here; it's often 15 seconds). Time to select avatar, create new account, and post inane messages? Maybe 5-15 minutes. Who is losing here, exactly?
Now add the "subtlety". If in the pursuit of not being IDed as a troll, a troll actually has to disguise their trolling topic and responses to the point that a discussion actually covers new ground and other posters bring new content to the table and thus a real discussion ensues...then nobody has been trolled in the end, now have they? The troll is wasting their time ;).
