For ELO (not Glicko) it would be better to lose against the lower-rated player first, then afterwards win against the higher-rated player. The net gain is 0. The other way that you mentioned is a net loss: -1.

If youre online rating is "underrated" then play more.

It'll even out.

WIN FIRST FOR SURE! YOU WILL GET MORE THAN BECAUSE ITS YOUR FIRST GAME, AND YOUR OPPONENT WONT LOSE MUCH! IF THE OTHER WAY ROUND, YOU WILL LOSE MUCH, AND THEN WIN LESS THAN IN THE FIRST PLACE BECAUSE YOUR OPPONENT WANT GAIN THAT MUCH :)

Well I find that your rating is a badge of honor but at the same time a good indication of where u are at skilled wise. Play to win every game! Try your best. Don't worry about your rating yet try to do better with each game. Learn from your mistakes! I tend to lose 100 points in any given day and work hard the next and get 120 points. Just keep trying to get better is all. Take your time!

Thanks everyone. It all worked out and I am actually 1972 now, 200 points above where I was when I asked this question. The person who beat me is also around 1900 now, I believe.
