I think chess is a state of mind. Some people don't detach from it, though.

Chess is a game that people spend so much of their life playing that at some point they feel the need to take even more time in their life to stop, wonder and ponder the question, “what is chess?”

no, i think not.

we will consider the question "what is chess" by analyzing first each word.

the word "what" reminds us of water... that is, chess is a game of beauty, and fluidity, a game of beautiful fluids, much like the games of the bedroom.

to us, "is" is the state of being... but my state is the state of andhrapradesh, and the word andhra is meaning "south". so chess is the game of downward trends, the game of great loss and despair.

finally, we must consider, what is the meaning of "chess". and in doing so, we arrive to our original question "what is chess" once again, seeing that the previous two words were really not enough to form a question that can be answered... the question of what chess truly is eludes us still. and so in this infinite descent of question asking, we see that "chess" is a game of infinity, a game of infinite possibilities.

I feel like chess is many things, but ultimately is a show of mental capacity, since typically the only way that you can lose is by ignorance or lack of knowledge of the game or strategies. when kids play kids, one of them will win because it's logical to assume the other also had 0 exposure to chess. when teens play, there is a bit more of a hesitation to move pieces. there are more losses more often, but they learn. and of course, as adults the strategy becomes to find the strategies most people use and then be able to block or counteract them. so it's an art, a science, it is used for recreation, but that's not all that it is. and most certainly it is a sport. to me, a sport is an activity in which the opponent must find a break in their opponents logic. that's how drives work in basketball.

A chess set could be art. But the game of chess is definitely not art, because it's  not a sculpture, painting, or drawing. Nobody is creating anything out of a raw material. It's not aesthetically pleasing, since its governed by rules and patterns and theories and all that rigid stuff. So it could be science, since there are truths and facts. I think Horsey is probably the closest, a game of perfection (maybe) played by imperfect humans.

ANOK1

its still just a game op , rtegardless if youd prefer more prosaic terms , yes it can be art yes it can be science it can be those things but generally it is a scrap and niceties dont do well i9n them granted a few times in your life you might create a stunning miniature but generally its more like hacking away at the coalface , hot dirty sweaty

A Shakespearean sonnet is also governed by rules and patterns and "rigid stuff".  There's no rule that says that more structured creations, material or not, are inherently any more or less aesthetically pleasing...so saying "it's not X, because Y" does not follow in this case.

I daresay a number of chess players find the game itself beyond the physical chess set aesthetically appealing.

I'll let someone else address the idea that art consists of raw materials formed into sculptures, paintings, and drawings wink.png.

I'm sure some people might consider playing a game art, just like some people think it's a sport. That would make playing Monopoly and Scrabble and tic tac toe art also. Art isn't defined as narrowly as sport. But I think most people agree there aren't as many rules for art. Art can be "wrong". For some people, the more "wrong" it is the more right it is. All that matters is that that someone likes the way it looks, no matter if it follows the rules or not. Chess is a game of rules. All the time you see people tell other people they did it wrong.

For chess to be art the person playing would have to have a reason, good or bad, for playing outside the rules, for doing it the way they think is best, regardless of the outcome so long as it looks good.  I think it would be like solving the math problem two plus two. It's just numbers that have to be done a certain way. Art would be two plus two equals five, no matter what anyone else thinks.
