WHAT IS CHESS FIRST TOP MOVE?

The top first move in chess for White is 1. e4 (moving the king's pawn two spaces forward). This is by far the most popular and historically significant opening move. It immediately claims central squares, opens lines for the queen and king's bishop, and prepares for castling. Many of the oldest and most well-known chess openings stem from 1. e4.

It was not possible to live without this new information! Thank you! I raised my rating with it.

I just had a quick look through the games from the last 5 World Championship matches and took notes of which first moves were played by white (only counting Classical section, not tie-breaks), and which led to wins or losses for white:

1. e4 = 36 (W=4, L=2)
1. d4 = 17 (W=4, L=2)
1. c4 = 8 (W=2, L=1)
1. Nf3 = 4 (W=1, L=1)

So e4 is by far the most common move at World Championship level, but also much more likely to end in a draw compared to d4 or the other options.

Nice stats, thank you! I thought that 1. d4 will get bigger number for super GMs games.
