Define game.
Define art.
Define sport.
Deborah P. Vossen, in her article "Chess Is Not a Game" (in Philosophy Looks at Chess, Open Court, 2008), claims that chess is not even a game (let alone an art or sport), but the idea of a game. According to her, "There is no one game of chess but rather an infinite number of game instantiations each properly referred to as a game of chess."
I'm not saying I'm agreeing. I'm just saying.

It's rich enough that one can pour art, sport, game, etc. into it and make a plausible argument.
In regards to art, I think it's a paltry canvas. It takes such great skill to gain command of the chessic elements needed to manipulate a game into art but even then it's not like any game compares to something Mozart produced.
And yes, I think we woodpushers are fooling ourselves when we say we are creating art in our games, but that's just another woodpusher's opinion.
What is chess? Do you consider it to be a game, an art, or a sport? Please post your opinion and back it up.
