Fairy chess actually isn't a specific chess variant. Rather it's list of various "fairy" pieces that are not found in standard chess. Many of the fairy pieces have come from chess variants over the years though.
Nowadays "Fairy Chess" is used in the vernacular when solving chess compositions with alternative chess pieces.
