This doesn't really surprise me -- being under the pressure of the professional chess circuit, especially for someone so young, seems to warrant some kind of outlet.  Carlsen modeling some new fashion down a catwalk doesn't fit with his chess image, but at least he gets to have some fun and escape the pressures of professional chess while at the same time probably making a nice amount of money.

I was thinking like Estragon that it would be some sort of promotional deal -- but even if this model thing turns out to be a joke I still think it's a reasonable possibility.

Which is a video of Carlsen's photo shoot with Liz Tyler.  For some reason to see Carlsen dressed up and posing really got me laughing by the end
