We always hear that Anatoly Karpov was a positional player. What does positional play really mean?

Controlling the squares and placing the pieces in good position to slowly suffocate the opponent and win the game building small advantages. He was not an attacking player who looked for tactics and aggressive moves like Kasparov, but more like a "slowly but surely" style, fighting against his opponents ideas until their position collapses

Considering someone positional player is more or less matter of opinion it is about degree of risk player like to undergo. The fact that Karpov is considered positional player doesńt mean that he was significantly worse in calculation compare to Kasparov, and vice versa, if Kasparov is considered attacking player, it doesńt mean that he was significantly worse in strategy than Karpov. Super GMs are great in everything.
