On Tactics Analysis board: Problem #0022095, at the end, it says Qualitätsgewinn. Could anyone tell me what this means, please?  I tried googling it but the related articles were in a foreign language (looks like German).  Thank you in advance.

HattrickStinkyduiker

means winning (gewinn) an exchange (Qualität)

what about google traslator, what about googling Qualitätsgewinn meaning (possibly adding English)

Sred

And yes, it's German. In most dictionaries you won't find these technical chess terms, just the general meaning of "Qualität" (which is quality).

Google translate will give you "quality gain", which is totally correct, but does not help.

Funny: when I google for the term, I get this thread as best match.

why not? quality gain? everybody understands it, to be fair it is not needed not know Deutsch to work out the meaning of Qualitätsgewinn at the end both German and English are Saxon languages

Because - as Hattrick pointed out - the correct translation in a chess context is "winning the exchange", not "quality gain".

Xeelfiar

In Italy we also say "quality" instead of "exchange"

he wants to know the meaning.

if you know what does "quality" means in chess

http://www.chess.com/article/view/exchange-of-quality

so quality gain is enough to understand Qualitätsgewinn...

pretty much the semantics explains itself, so you just have to use a little bit of logic

tonightatsix

OK "winning the exchange" it is.  Thank you guys.  You guys are the best ^-^

I´ve always understood it to mean an exchange of a rook with a bishop or a knight; whoever has won the rook has won the quality.

tonightatsix

Oh you know what? In that game, a rook was won for a bishop.  Interesting!

There you go then! I´ve never heard or read it used in any other context, so I´ve always just assumed that that´s the definition.
