I've a display on my computer that tells me I'm in the 95th percentile with a 1496 rating. I thought that'd be a starting point, but I don't know where to go after that.

The following is dated, but it's the latest that I could find.

It's listed in a chart on the right side of the screen in the link above.

1200 average for casual players

1600 average for club players

2000 average for tournament players

Then there's a whole different category of "average" when you get into the titled master's pool . . .

Those saying 1200 are just being silly. The 50th percentile is in the low 800s. Even assuming a few outliers on the top end pull the mean up to *maybe* near 1000, that’s nowhere near 1200. Besides, for data distributions with a long tail on one end, statisticians generally prefer using the median as a measure of central tendency.

Also, an 800 player these days is much stronger than an 800 player even a few years ago. With the proliferation of chess videos and easy ways to play, it’s just not the as it was even when I was on the chess team in high school way less than a decade ago. I went back to my high school and all the kids there were just way better than we were half a dozen years ago. They all have played thousands of games online.

This info is available in the stats section of chess.com. Blitz is 833 apparently. Rapid 825.

Just shy of 700 in rapid. I pretty much only play rapid.

1200 for casual players? 85th percentile for casual players? I don't think so.

800-900 which is 50th+ percentile is probably around casual.

club players probably closer to 1400-1500 average.

strong club 1800

tournament 2000+
