Back on topic: certainly problem solving and intelligence is involved in chess, but pattern recognition is key. There are many very intelligent people who are terrible at pattern recognition. IQ may or may not reflect this depending on the type of test.

You don't necessarily need to be good at pattern recognition to play chess well.

I'd argue that the main skill you need is to be able to think several possible moves ahead, and to evaluate these hypothetical positions ...

True, but sound pattern recognition makes all that easier.

Otoh, it can also make one lazy in other areas if you coast on it.

I think that is a good rule of thumb, but I’M below average and my IQ is 145

PF3040

It is probably 120.

AgathasWay

iq is uncorrelated to chess skill

All of these are wrong.

Yep. Way wrong.

Magnus seems relatively bright, so at least 120 is not hard to believe. His memory is off the charts. Aronian also seems quite intelligent. Kasparov actually took a test that showed him to be only little below genius.

Nakamura tested at 105 under less than optimal conditions. I doubt that Wesley So would have done any better.

RevolvingPotato

prolly average or slightly above average in general

What IQ test did you take? Not one of these online fake tests I hope?

Nearly everyone on the internet claims to have above-average IQs.

It's quite ironic, at this point, that the self-reported average is consistently way above average. tongue.png

"Finish this sentence: Jack and Jill went up the ____

A) Bucket

B) Lobster

C) Rain

D) Hill"

"Ummmm ... I dunno. They all look pretty equal. How about ... D?"

*Congratulations! You correctly chose D! Your calculated IQ score is ... 150!*

"Sweet."

If we have a lot of teenagers here, the average IQ has dropped.  People doing research on this stuff have found IQ is dropping which is strange because until now IQ had been increasing.

This article is a good read on the subject. https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/iq-rates-are-dropping-many-developed-countries-doesn-t-bode-ncna1008576

I'm told teenagers have a different sort of intelligence and intelligence is mutating.

Teenagers have always been here it’s just dumb people old and new joining the band wagon

I was just pointing out that teenagers of today on average have lower IQ than earlier generations.  Face reality. Face it, education of today is inferior compared to years past which is likely in part due to inferior minds.

I’ve compared textbooks from the early 20th century to those in use when I was in school and those used today. I would never be able to make the claim you have here as the evidence of the books contradicts it.

Now, if students today do not or cannot read the textbooks, you might have a point.

I think you do not have enough world experience to make a valid observation.

What percentage of students are actually trying in school?  Compare that to thirty years ago and you will see a dramatic difference, especially among male students.

But your worldview is based on your experience, so you have no clue.

Comparing apples to apples, compare the AP Calculus questions of today to the 80's, which did not allow graphing calculators.  The mathematical rigor required back then is significantly higher than today.

I guess you never read Ziryab's profile.  This should be amusing...
