what is the best opening?

Chase2020J For you right now (judging by your rating)  the "best" and "most useful" openings are Double KP Openings which you should play as much as possible in order to learn how to play "open games" which often, but not always arise from these openings

Single KP and Double QP Openings (in general, with many exceptions*) lead to "semi-open" games

Single QP and flank openings (English Opening, KIA, etc) are considered to be "closed" games (again, often but not always)

BTW this advice isn't from me - it's from the great hypermodern GM Richard Reti in his classic work "Masters of the ChessBoard"

BTW to learn openings or any other phase of the game you need to start playing some games at slow TLs you're not going to improve as much by concentrating on bullet and/or blitz TLs exclusively.

thanks to you all for giving me your suggestions, I was only asking because i open with either the queens gambit or the scholars mate, but i want to join the chess team at my school, and I will have harder opponents, and it probally wont work if i try the scholars mate on them. Smile

Although i did this to someone 2 years older than me:

The original poster is rated less than 1000...we should be advising her not to worry about openings at this point in her development, no? just learn basic tactics, opening are not an area to study at this point.

Hi - I think a relevant article might be "What's a Good Opening?" and possibly "Classical Development" and "Opening Principles" Regards, NM Dan Heisman
