the king is the best piece. even though moves like a snail, you need it to win the game. It's like a temporary totem of undying.

Well you need the king to win the game but the king is still not a good piece, like if you had an AI in a video game that you need to keep safe to win. The AI is not very helpful but important. I personally think the Queen is the best piece because it is the most helpful.

Importance of pawns is not just because of promotion, game is defined by pawns, their geometry, structure. pawns are the main force, funny, all pieces are just a helper..
imagine having all pieces but no pawns on the board, both sides. almost all trades would be between equal pieces.. you'd exchange knights for knights, bishops for bishops and queens for queens etc..
pawns allow creation of tactics, and all strategies are developed behind pawns
