I think their board type is either translucent or transparent.

This is the one I've been using lately, Wood pieces and Bases board

I use club pieces with blue board and dark red background. 

Look at that subtle off-white colouring. The tasteful thickness of it.

Neo pieces and glass board. Glass is good because the board has low opacity, allowing you to customize the colours, textures and patterns of your chessboard by changing the background underneath it
