What is the point of cheating?

There is a lot of discussion in the forums on people cheating, using computers. Why do you think they do it? It must take a lot of time and effort and all the cheater gets out of it is theirr computer program beating a person and an elevated grade. I don't see why there would be any satisfaction in having your program beat someone, and it is a pretty low level form of trolling. And as for an elevated grade: yes, the computer has won some games that the cheater proably could not. This gives no prestige, no financial gain and no benefit.

So, why do you think the cheaters do it?

That might be a common reason but it's pretty pathetic to claim the credit for what the program has done. It would make sense if you'd written the program but I suspect most of the cheaters are even worse programmers than they are chess players.

Leveling you higher without backing it with chess-knowledge

Same reasons there are criminals....they want to do it.

Fair comment, but it leads straight to another question: why do they "want to do it"?

lack of self esteem.

That makes a lot of sense. But, the cheater knows that they are cheating so do they really gain self-esteem by cheating?

But as I just said to someone else, the cheater knows they are a cheater. They know they have that higher grade because they have been cheating. What is the benefit of all that effort?

If I knew that, I would be a rich man.

Well, criminals rob because they gain from it: if I steal your car I can sell it for a big profit. i don't see the profit from chess cheating.

Human nature...

You think it is human nature to cheat? I don't agree with that at all.

That troll is obviously stupid, but I think most of us are somewhat smarter.

For someone with low morals, there is no difference between the perceived admiration from others, and their own personal sense of accomplishment.

If the "reward" is identical then the means to get there are unimportant.

Fascinating comment, thank you for it. This makes a lot of sense to me.

The point is not what he is thinking or knowing, the point is what other people see.

When I first started playing, a technician was at my house hooking up cable or something and I brought up the topic of chess. He told me he played on line AND CHEATED!

I laughed out loud because, to me, it seemed so absurd!  As the OP points out, it seems so pointless! At first, I thought he was kidding but he was serious.

What can I say?? People are  WEIRD!... and many of them are unscrupulous!
